The other day I received an email update from LJ Ross saying her new book, The Lizard, from her Summer Suspense Mysteries, is available for pre-order. I’m sure, as crime readers, many of you will have enjoyed her DCI Ryan series, and it got me thinking about how these books influenced my writing career.
LJ Ross was a trailblazer for self-publishing. She has given so many of us indi authors encouragement by showing it is possible to go it alone. But as she has proved, to be successful, you have to not only be a talented writer but also incredibly astute about the publishing side of the business. She caught the initial Amazon wave and sold millions of copies. Now we are all trying to follow in her wake with even a small percentage of her sales.
I became immersed in her DCI Ryan series in 2022. My bookshelf, below, contains most of them, although in usual form I have mislaid a couple of copies.
What is it about these books that attract readers? The real-life locations, such as Holy Island, Hadrian’s Wall and Sycamore Gap, give a vivid backdrop to the stories. And it is these landmarks and places which are the titles of her books. There is a core of regular officers, all with their own strong characteristics, which means each book is like revisiting old friends. And a protagonist in Ryan who is a very real hero; handsome, intelligent, and with strong morals. However, sometimes the romance can feel a bit overdone and there are situations in which artistic licence takes precedence over correct police procedure.
My own DS Tom Robertson has been described in a review as ‘intelligent, determined, and refreshingly human,’ and although a very different character to Ryan, hopefully fills the role of the likeable and efficient detective who gets the job done. He is also still searching for the steady relationship that Ryan has found with Dr Anna Taylor. Read on in the series to see if Tom can find his perfect love.
